Course Breakdown

The Divers West Open Water Diver course consists of an Orientation Night, Pool Swim/Tread and the following three main phases:
  • Knowledge Development- a 2 night, instructor led, classroom session to review your homework OR PADI's eLearning option (study at home, take quizes and final exam online.)
  • Confined Water Dives- 2 days at the pool where you get to try out your underwater space suits, and learn scuba diving skills
  • Open Water Dives- 2 days to complete your 4 ocean dives. Here is where you apply what you've learned in the pool and have some fun!
*Because some students learn at different paces, some students may require additional time to get certified. Ask about our Private Lessons. Check out our Open Water Diver class schedules and sign up here.

The Scuba Gear You Will Use

When you take our Open Water Diver course, the main scuba diving equipment is included for FREE with the course. This will incude tanks, weights, BCD(Buoyancy Compensation Device), wetsuit, and regulators with compass and dive computer. Proper gear fit is most imprtant so you must own your personal gear. This includes Mask, Snorkel, Fins, Gloves, and Booties. If you don't have these items, don't worry! Divers West offers a student discount if you purchase these 5 personal items through us. Plus, we'll give you a personal fitting session. During your class orientation, we will discuss the type of gear that is suitable for scuba diving in California and other parts of the world. Not all snorkeling gear is suitable.

The Learning Materials You will Receive

If you sign up for our OWD Course via this web site, you muststop by the shop to pick up your PADI Open Water Diver Crew Pack w/course materials and complete your class registration. There will also be some paperwork, including medical questionaire, and homework that you will need to complete prior to your first pool session.

eLearning
Getting off work or school too late and can't make our classroom on time? Instead of two days in our classroom, you can study your scuba diving theory at home, take your quizes, and your final exam online! You will then take a brief quiz at the shop to demonstrate your understanding of the material.

Sign up here to reserve your spot and class dates. Don't forget to stop by the shop right away to finish registration and pick up your course materials and paperwork.

Classroom Learning

We feel the best way to learn is face to face with an instructor rather than studying on an electronic device by yourself. You get to ask questions on the spot and interact with your new dive buddies. You will receive a physical text book, study at home, then participate in 2 classroom sessions.  Sign up here to select and reserve your spot in the class that fits your schedule, then stop by to pick up your course material and finish your course registration.
With the classroom option, you will be required to watch the PADI Open Water Diver DVD. This DVD is available for purchase or rent at the store.

Private/Semi Private Lessons

Would you prefer more personalized attention? Would you like to learn at your own pace rather than that of a classroom environment? Would you like to train in your own pool? We offer private and semi private instruction for those that would like a more customized schedule or more personalized training. Please call (626) 529-5220 or stop by the store for more details. Additional fees will apply. Dates are subject to availability, distance, and weather conditions.
