What's included

The Divers West Open Water Diver course consists of an Orientation Night and the following three main phases:
  • Knowledge Development- 2 classroom sessions to learn the theory
  • Confined Water Dives- 2 pool sessions to learn and practice your diving skills
  • Open Water Dives- 2 ocean days to complete your 4 open water dives. Here is where you apply what you've learned and have some fun!
We offer two class schedules each month, a week night schedule, and a weekend schedule.

Week night classes and pool sessions are on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6:30-10:30pm, for 4 evenings.

Weekend classes and pool sessions are all day Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am-5:00pm, during 1 weekend. Classroom in the morning and pool in the afternoon on both days.

The ocean dives always take place on a Saturday and Sunday. Typically, Saturday is a beach dive from 7am to 12pm, and Sunday is an all day boat trip to Catalina Island boarding at 6am and returning to the harbor at 5:00pm. On occasion, and depending on the time of year, we may take the ferry to Casino Point Marine Park in Avalon to complete our open water dives.

After you sign up, you'll need to reserve your spot for a class, so you'll need to call the shop or stop by  to select the dates for your class. Check out our class schedule.

Prerequisites

To enroll in the Divers West Open Diver course or Junior Open Water Diver course, you must be:
  • 10 years or older
  • Must be in generally good health

The Scuba Gear

When you take our Open Water course, Divers West will provide your rental gear. This will incude tanks, weights, BCD, wetsuit, and regulators with computer. You must provide your personal items which include Mask, Fins, Snorkel, Gloves, and Booties. If you don't have all or some of these personal items, don't worry! As part of your instruction, we will discuss the types of gear that is suitable for scuba diving during your orientation. If you need to purchase anything, we'll offer you a student discount.

The Learning Materials You Need

Once signed up for the course you will pick up your PADI Open Water Crew Pack at our dive shop. It will include all the reading materials you'll need for the course. There will be some paperwork, reading assignments and exercises you will need to complete prior to your first class session. Additionally, you will be required to watch the PADI Open Water DVD, available for purchase or rent at the store.

eLearning

Prefer to study online, take your quizes and final online? That's cool! Look for the 'PADI eLearning' button on this page. Sign up online then stop by the store to get the rest of your materials and gear. Do all the work, quizes and final test at home in your PJ's! Maybe sneak it in during work? If you select the eLearning option, the eLearning fee only replaces the 2 classroom sessions with the online elearning. You will still need to come in to sign up for the pool and ocean sessions to complete your certification. The eLearning option is recommended if you can't make the scheduled class dates or if you need a little bit more scheduling flexibility. Just don't forget to give yourself enough time to finish the online course. At least a week. That way you'll be able to join the next pool session and ocean dives!

Private Lessons

Would you prefer more personalized attention? Would you like to learn at your own pace rather than that of a classroom environment? Would you like to do your confined water training in your own pool? We offer private and semi private instruction for those that would like a more customized schedule or more personal attention. Please call (626) 529-5220 or stop by the store for more information. Additional fees will apply. Dates are subject to instructor availability.
